Treating Acne with Acupuncture: What You Should Know

Acne is a common problem. Teens and adults often have acne that does not respond to the usual skin cream and medicines. The use of acupuncture to treat acne is becoming more popular now. Many people want to first know how the process works. Acupuncture involves the insertion of tiny, hair-thin needles along meridian points. These points correspond to different parts and functions of the body. The results depend on where the needles are inserted. They are kept in for approximately 45 minutes, then removed. Even though needles are used, acupuncture by itself is not painful. There may be some mild discomfort, but most people say it's quite tolerable. The reason the needles are not painful is not only because they are thin, but because they are solid throughout and rounded.

Acupuncture for acne is thought to work because the insertion of the needles is thought to clear blockages that cause acne and help the body accurately flush out toxins that may lead to acne outbreaks. In addition to bodily acupuncture, there is the type that is performed on the ear only. The ear is like a holographic model of the body and has sections which correspond to various parts of the body. It is very similar to the feet and hands, which are manipulated in a procedure called reflexology. If you hate the idea of needles, you might want to try acupressure or reflexology as an alternative to acupuncture.

If you are interested in treating acne with acupuncture, you should find a qualified and licensed specialist in your area. When you meet with a practitioner, ask any and all questions you may have about the procedure. Make sure that the practitioner you ultimately choose is educated, licensed and qualified to perform acupuncture. Different states have different regulations regarding this form of Chinese medicine, so be sure to understand what they are when you go for your initial consultation.
