If you are considering a career in acupuncture, you should take a look at the many books, charts and maps on the subject. They will provide a good base for your education. Helpful resources are available in libraries and of course online. Acupuncture charts and maps are essential if you wish to start learning about acupuncture.
An acupuncture chart shows the various points on the body where needles can be inserted to stimulate various bodily functions. There are over 360 points that you will see illustrated. You may notice that the area where the needles are placed is not the same area where the problem is happening. This is a very similar to the theory of reflexology which uses the manipulation of points on the hands and feet to affect different parts of the body. With acupuncture, acupressure and reflexology, points are manipulated and stimulated to cause effects in specific parts of the body. People often get these therapies for the purposes of pain relief, weight loss and even to release addictions.
Many of the acupuncture textbooks out there will contain illustrated charts for you to use. There are lots of different titles available if you are studying the subject. One popular book that contains a variety of charts is Standard Meridian Points of Acupuncture which was written and released by an institute of acupuncture in China. Another similar title is Finding Effective Acupuncture Points by Denmei Shudo. For a more broad view of Chinese medicine, check out Navigating the Channels of Chinese Medicine by Yitian Ni.
Medical charts, acupuncture books and other helpful resources will be provided by any recognized acupuncture training institute. However, you may also want to purchase other items to enhance the materials your receive as part of your education. If you are already a licensed, practicing acupuncture provider, reading up on the subject can keep you on your toes and reinforce what you already know.
