How Does Acupuncture Work?
![]() |
Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine that originates from China and has been used for thousands of years. It is now used all over the world and is one of the most popular forms of alternative medical therapies. It can be used to treat a number of disorders including chronic pain and depression. How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture involves inserting thin sterile needles into points on the body. The idea of being stuck with needles is scary for some people, luckily, the needles used in this therapy are thin as a hair and rounded on the tip. There is little to no pain involved in this holistic healing method. Where the needles will be inserted on your body will depend on what problem you are having. Acupuncture is based around the theory of referred pain. For example, the point at which the needles are inserted may not the the point where the problem is occurring.
This is not as obscure as it sounds. Reflexology is a similar therapy that uses pressure points on the hands and feet to stimulate various parts of the body. Not only that, but the manipulation of trigger points to treat many types of bodily pain and discomfort is another type of therapy that deals with referred pain. Trigger points can be stimulated with pressure, or of course, acupuncture. You will find there are many practitioners offering these types of therapies these days. Some traditional physicians offer acupuncture. There are also specialists who do acupuncture only. Even massage therapists are getting into the areas of acupuncture, acupressure and reflexology.
A session of acupuncture treatment will take around an hour. Many practitioners will leave the needles in for 30 to 45 minutes. Before, during and after this time you will be monitored closely and your vital signs will be taken. Some therapists will provide a diversion during the therapy such as music or television to enjoy while you're waiting. Depending on your individual needs and how you respond to the treatment, you may require regular and/or numerous sessions to get maximum benefits. Now that you know the answer to how does acupuncture work, you are ready to take the next step. A qualified practitioner near you can answer any other questions you have and prepare you for your first treatment if you decide to give this therapy a try.
