The Basics of Ancient Chinese Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an age old remedy from ancient China. It originates from sages in the East who noted energy flows through the human body. A famous sage called Fu Hsi postulated that the energy comes in two forms - creation and reception. From this came the concept of yin and yang or positive and negative, give and take. This concept is the basis of acupuncture. Acupuncture uses needles to stimulate energy in various parts of the body.

The first acupuncture needles were made from bone. These days, they are made from sterile metal. They are hair thin, rounded and solid. This means that when they are inserted into your skin, there is little to no pain. During an acupuncture session, there may be clusters of these tiny needles placed in median points which will vary depending on your individual goals. There are over 300 areas of the body that can be needled. The needles will stay in for an average of 45 minutes, during which time you can meditate, listen to music or sometimes even watch TV. Although it sounds painful, the needles are so thin and crafted in such a way that you can hardly feel them at all.

Alternative holistic treatment might involve using herbs and aromatherapy as well. For example, if you are seeking acupuncture for detoxification purposes, your practitioner may also integrate stimulating aromas like peppermint and herbal tonics like milk thistle and licorice root to enhance the results of the acupuncture. For weight loss, you might be told to sniff a sweet, satisfying vanilla fragrance and told to drink a spicy ginger cayenne tea which can help enhance the metabolism boosting properties of an acupuncture session.

Chinese acupuncture is now used all over the world. There are a countless number of qualified practitioners in the United States. Check your local Yellow Pages to find a professional in your area. Upon your initial consultation, you can ask any questions that you may have and find out more about how the procedure works, how much it costs, how long it will take and how many sessions you will need.
