A Primer on Acupuncture Laws
![]() |
Whether you plan a career in acupuncture or already practising, you should be aware of laws in this area of holistic healing. Regulations in the United States concerning acupuncture are different from state to state. It is important that you know the specific laws in your particular state. Acupuncture therapists should be familiar with the laws in this regard. Every practitioner should also have an attorney who knows about this area of altearntive medicine. You may never need your attorney's services but you should always retain one just in case.
Let's look at some of the laws in various states in the U.S.A.. In Alabama, there are no state laws or regulations. There is, however, a statue introduced by the Alabama Association of Oriental Medicine. In California, there is a state acupuncture board. This board consists of qualified members who make acupuncture rules and regulations and enforce consequences for non-compliance. California requires practitioners to possess licensure and certification by a board approved educational facility. In Oklahoma, only M.D.s and D.O.s are permitted to practice acupuncture without any specific training or certification. Chiropractors can practice acupuncture if they obtain the proper education and licensing.
You should understanding the regulations of your state, not only if you are a practitioner, but also if you are a patient. Before you go to a practitioner in your state, do some research on the laws. Also, make sure any acupuncturist you are considering is adhering to these laws. If there are no regulations in your state, you should carefully consider the particular education and experience of an acupuncturist before deciding whether or not to allow them to work on you.
A Primer on Acupuncture Laws exist to protect both patients and practitioners. However, there is much to be desired in many states regarding this issue. As holistic and alternative medicine becomes more widespread and popular, one can only hope that the state governments keep up and update their requirements. Another area where improvement is needed is Western medicine. More M.D.s should learn more about alternative medicine to better serve their patients. Advances in alternative healing are happening every day, so it's only a matter of time before more effective education in this area for all doctors and regulation in more U.S. states will be implemented.
