What is Acupuncture?
![]() |
Welcome to acupuncture-help.com. Acupuncture is a type of Chinese medicine which has been practised for thousands of years. It has become much more mainstream in Western cultures recently as a form of alternative healing therapy. Acupuncture is based on the theory that the insertion of needles at strategic points in the body can help the body's natural healing functions to operate efficiently in terms of healing, detoxification and pain relief. Medical doctors and allied professionals as well as patients are now turning to acupuncture as well as other alternative therapies as an adjunct to traditional Western therapies.
Some people may approach acupuncture with a sense of trepidation due to fear of needles. Being stuck with numerous needles can of course cause anxiety. However, the thought of the procedure is quite often worse than the actual procedure itself. The needles used in acupuncture are disposable, very thin and sterile. As they are so thin, most patients do not feel any pain at all. The most common sensation reported is numbness or a heavy feeling. As everyone is different, some may report mild soreness or discomfort.
The WHO (World Health Organisation) lists 47 different uses for acupuncture. Pain relief (headache, back and neck, arthritis) is commonly treated with acupuncture. Other uses for acupuncture include treatment of skin disorders such as acne. Depression, detoxification and weight loss are other conditions treated by acupuncture. Holistic medicine however is not a cure-all. It can help with certain problems and should only be used in consultation with your normal medical doctor. Acupuncture as with any other kind of natural or holistic therapy should be used a complement to Western medicine, not as a replacement. Your medical doctor should monitor any kind of natural therapy you decide to have.<./p>
Acupuncture is a safe and effective form of alternative medicine. It is even used by vets for treating pets. It is used in pets, for instance your pet dog or cat for weight loss, joint and bone problems.
